BestPrep – MN Business Venture

Submitted by, Sophia Bera CFP® - Committee Member

This year, I had the opportunity to be a business plan judge for high school students who attended MN Business Venture at St. John’s University. The students were broken into “companies” which were lead by “CEOs.” Each CEO was a student leader who had gone through the camp program the previous year. These students had to come up with a fictional product and create a business plan to present to a panel of judges. I was on a panel with four other financial professionals and we got to decide whether or not we would approve the loan they’d requested.

I was incredibly impressed by all four presentations that were given. My favorite product was a solar powered backpack that charged your phone while you hiked! (Why hasn’t this been invented yet?!?!) The students had worked hard naming the company, creating a marketing plan, forming financial statements, and researching their competition. If you have a high school student, I highly recommend that they sign up for MN Business Venture next year and spend a week at biz camp! If you think that this sounds like an amazing way to spend the afternoon, consider volunteering for one of BestPrep’s many financial programs.
